    • The history of diptychs and triptychs is a long one. Rooted in tradition from the ancient world and the Byzantine, Medieval and Renaissance eras, the use of diptychs and triptychs has ranged from small ivory panels hinged together to large-scale multi-piece paintings for religious ceremonies.

A commonality between all of these forms is the narrative experience presented. The idea of the diptych and triptych was to tell a story—whether it be a secular or religious narrative. Many modern artists have created pieces that were designed to be displayed together as the format of the diptych and triptych continues to be popular story telling devices.

2 + 3 x 18: Diptychs and Triptychs by 18 Contemporary Artists examines the way eighteen contemporary artists have used the idea of the diptych and triptych to create unexpected and exciting juxtapositions within and between works. Breaking free of the traditional idea of hinged panels, these artists use a variety of media to create their works. In some instances, the narrative may not be easily recognizable, but all of the works carry on the initial idea of the pieces telling a story when seen together.

    • The interesting aspect of this particular exhibition is the variety of ways in which these Ohio artists have used their medium of choice to create their stories. In many instances, the artists have focused on personal experiences or feelings to create the final work. In other cases, a life-long interest in a particular subject or idea has manifested itself in the final outcome.

Included in the exhibition are works by Ohio artists Julie M. Abijanic (Mixed Media), Terri Albanese (Mixed Media/Glass), Erin Holscher Almazan (Printmaking), Kristen Cliffel (Ceramics), Stephanie Craig (Ceramics), Patti Fields (Mixed Media), Thomas Frontini (Painting), Karla Hackenmiller (Printmaking), Ray Juaire (Mixed Media), Lori Kella (Photography), Greg Martin (Photography), Nancy McEntee (Photography), Deborah Pinter (Printmaking/Photography), Agnes Ray (Mixed Media), Jennifer Rosengarten (Painting), Emily Sullivan Smith (Printmaking), Art Werger (Printmaking), and Melissa Vogley Woods (Multidisciplinary).
